Risk factors include:
- Irritants introduced to the mouth, throat and esophagus, such as broken
teeth or frequent biting of the soft tissue of cheek and gums by jagged
teeth
- Improperly fitted dentures that cause jaw irritation and similar harmful
biting
- Excessive alcohol intake, smoking or the use of chewing tobacco can
overwhelm the cells in these areas and the throat and esophagus
- Consuming toxins, hot or spicy or rough irritating foods even in small
doses over a long period can cause damage to these areas negating the cells
existence and triggering a compulsive create cycle on the part of those
cells present
Symptoms include chronic ulcers of the mouth including the tongue, constantly
irritated throat or esophagus. These may seem to reoccur or do not seem to be
healing. At the highest risk are tobacco cigarette smokers. If you smoke, having
a check up by a doctor to detect any early pre-cancers in the mouth, jaw or gums
can save your life.
